Barbie Ferreira is reflecting on her style evolution throughout the years

The Euphoria and Mile End Kicks actress opened up to PEOPLE about how her style has "changed," while at a party for Damson Madder's first Los Angeles pop-up store

“When you’re a kid, you experiment with your outfits more, and now I know what I like and experiment within the same world,” Ferreira says

Barbie Ferreira is looking back.

The actress, who broke out with her role as Kat Hernandez in Euphoria when the show premiered in 2019, is reflecting on how her style has evolved over the years. Ferreira, 29, tells PEOPLE exclusively that her style has gotten more “refined” over the years.

“I started in the industry when I was, like, 21,” Ferreira recalls, while at the opening of Damson Madder’s first Los Angeles pop-up store, in the brand’s olive green Aoife midi dress. “I’m 29, almost 30 now, so things have changed.”

During Ferreira’s early red carpet appearances for Euphoria, she opted for method dressing that echoed Kat’s storyline in ensembles consisting of mesh and latex. These days, Ferreira is still having fun with her style — see: the bloody trompe-l'œil heels and snakeskin corseted dress by Dilara Findikoglu she wore to the April 6 premiere of Faces of Death. But she’s doing so with a more tailored approach.

“When you’re a kid, you experiment with your outfits more, and now I know what I like and experiment within the same world,” Ferreira explains. “It’s a little less; a little bit more refined.”

For her look at the Damson Madder pop-up, which runs through the weekend, closing April 26, Ferreira went with a softer vibe. “I really love the color, and I wanted to try the scarf,” she says, adding, “I went with my gut. I’m a huge Damson Madder fan. I’ve been wearing their pajamas, and the dresses are always my favorite. I have some short-sleeve ones.”

Bold color choices are a go-to for Ferreira for special events, as she recalls her cobalt blue Oscars look from this past year’s ceremony — a custom gown from Gap by Zac Posen — stands as her favorite red carpet look to date. “Before that was my Met Gala look, but for sure I love my Oscars look,” Ferreira says, referencing the pearl-laden, draped strapless gown by Johnathan Simkhai she wore to the 2021 event. “The Zac Posen dress was gorgeous. That’s the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen.”

While Ferreira is staying tight-lipped about this year’s Met Gala, taking place Monday, May 4, she is revealing the inspiration for her looks in her upcoming film Mile End Kicks, Chandler Levack’s autobiographical comedy set in 2011 that follows a 24-year-old music writer in Montreal who “gets romantically involved with members of an indie band she decides to publicize,” according to the film’s synopsis.

Ferreira, who plays Grace Pine, looked to the aughts while researching the role. “With Chandler Bava, who wrote and directed the movie, she sent me a lot of her articles when she was a music journalist, so I read a lot from the archives, and I really immersed myself in being in Montreal, which is very creative and an incredibly cool city — so, so fun,” Ferreira shares. “I had a blast there with the cast and the crew.”

As for the inspiration behind her wardrobe in the film, Ferreira says, “Courtney [Mitchell], who did the costume, had worked at American Apparel before, so we were like, ‘Oh, we know what we're talking about here when it comes to American Apparel in 2011.’ I wore some of the American Apparel stuff that I used to wear, making sure it was period-appropriate. It was really fun. All three of us really collaborated on it, and I wore some of Chandler's T-shirts.”

Looking to the present, Ferreira did not return to Euphoria for season 3 — a decision she recently explained during an April 4 episode of Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, saying Kat’s storyline “just wasn’t going anywhere.”

When asked where she thinks Kat would be today, Ferreira says, “Hopefully in college. I didn't go to college, though, but maybe she would.”

Ferreira adds she’ll be tuning into the third season, which began airing April 12. “I haven't gotten to it yet,” Ferreira explains, adding, “I've been traveling, but I am actually going to watch it because I really do love the girls and I'm really excited to see what they do.”
